An Interview With Wayne Thiebaud

A review and interview by Kenneth Baker of the SF Chronicle, Sunday June 26th.

Just days before departing for Italy in March, I received a news release by e-mail - the first ever to arrive - from the Museo Morandi in Bologna. It announced a special exhibition, just opened there, combining Giorgio Morandi's paintings with those of Northern California great Wayne Thiebaud.

Earlier this month I learned that, after it closes in Bologna in October, the Thiebaud/Morandi exhibition will travel internationally, including to a Bay Area venue yet to be named.

. . . In [a] sense, Thiebaud figured as a natural candidate for the Museo Morandi's nascent program of putting Morandi's work "in dialogue" with that of contemporary painters who admire him.

The first two paintings are by Morandi, the bottom two by Thiebaud.
